In short

Until you decide otherwise, this website sets no cookies. It stores two entries in your browser's local storage: your language, and your answer to the consent bar.

If you consent to advertising measurement, the Google Ads tag is loaded and sets cookies. That is the only thing on this website that sets a cookie at all, and it happens only after you have said yes.

One measurement does run without asking: Plausible counts page views. It is listed here because it loads from another provider's server, not because it stores anything – it sets no cookie and writes nothing to your device, which is why no consent is required for it. It is described below.

Reach measurement without cookies

To see which pages are read at all, we use Plausible Analytics, provided by Plausible Insights OÜ, Västriku tn 2, 50403 Tartu, Estonia, under the site key ticksights.com.

It sets no cookie, writes nothing to local or session storage, and reads nothing that is already on your device. Because § 25 (1) TDDG is about exactly that – storing information on your device and accessing it – it does not apply, and there is nothing here for you to consent to. What is transmitted when you open a page is the page address, the referring URL if your browser sends one, your browser, operating system and device class, and your country derived from your IP address. Clicks on links leading off this website, our checkout above all, are counted as well.

Your IP address is not stored: it is combined once with a value that changes daily into a checksum that cannot be reversed and stops working as a recogniser the next day. Processing happens on servers in the EU. The legal basis for it is Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR, and you can object at any time under Art. 21 (1) GDPR; the details are in our Privacy Policy.

Advertising measurement, only with your consent

We advertise on Google. To find out whether those ads reach anyone, we use the Google Ads tag (gtag.js, conversion ID AW-16814730831), provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland.

The tag is not loaded when you open a page. Before you decide, no request goes to Google at all, not even a cookie-free one. A bar at the bottom of the page asks first, and both answers are one click away. Only if you accept is the tag loaded and only then does the following apply:

  • _gcl_au: set by us on our own domain to link an ad click to what you do afterwards. Retained for 90 days.
  • _gcl_aw and _gcl_dc: set only if you reached this site through one of our ads and your browser therefore carried a click identifier. Retained for 90 days.
  • Cookies set by Google itself on its own domains, for example google.com and doubleclick.net, for remarketing and to measure conversions across sites. Google sets and reads these under its own responsibility; retention periods are set by Google.

This transmits your IP address, information about the pages you view here, and the click identifier if there is one, to Google, including to servers in the USA. Google is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, so an adequacy decision under Art. 45 GDPR covers that transfer. What Google does with the data on its own account is set out in its own privacy policy.

The legal basis is your consent under § 25 (1) TDDG and Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR. Consent is voluntary: nothing on this website works differently if you decline, and we do not ask again.

Changing your mind

You can withdraw your consent at any time, with effect for the future, using the Advertising settings entry at the bottom of every page. The bar reappears, and choosing to decline stops the tag from being loaded on any further page. Cookies already set can be deleted through your browser's settings for site data.

Withdrawing is exactly as easy as consenting, one click in the same place. That is what Art. 7 (3) GDPR requires, and it is the honest arrangement in any case.

What we store in your browser

Under the key ts-lang we store the language you picked, as a two-letter code. If your browser is set to a language we publish and you are reading a different one, a small bar offers the matching version; this entry is what stops it from asking again on every page.

Under the key ts-consent we store your answer to the consent bar, as the single word granted or denied. Without it we would have to ask you on every page, and an unanswered bar would be indistinguishable from a refused one.

Neither entry ever leaves your device, neither is transmitted to us or to anyone else, neither contains an identifier and neither allows us to recognise you. Both are strictly necessary within the meaning of § 25 (2) no. 2 TDDG: the first for a feature you have used, the second in order to honour a decision you have made. Neither therefore requires consent of its own. You can remove them at any time through your browser's settings for site data. Without them, both bars simply ask again.

If, and only if, you have consented to advertising measurement and have just completed a purchase, one further marker is written to session storage on the confirmation page, under a key beginning ts-conv:. It stops the same purchase from being counted twice when the page is reloaded, holds nothing but the digit 1, and is gone when you close the tab. It is part of the measurement you agreed to, and without that consent it is never written.

What is still ruled out

  • no cookies other than the advertising cookies you have agreed to
  • no social media plugins or embedded videos
  • no external fonts, maps or content delivery networks
  • no cross-site tracking and no profile about you: the reach measurement counts page views, not people, and cannot follow you to any other website
  • nothing from a third party beyond the two measurements named on this page

If this changes

Should we introduce anything further that stores information on your device or transmits data to a third party, we will update this page and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent beforehand.
